Yes the entire padded dash needs to come out. The gauge can come out from the backside of the cluster but first you would have to remove the printed circuit.

I have good used gauges here or if you wanted to send me yours I can rebuild that one for you.

I am guessing........ but you have already eliminated a ground issue at the tank and the sending unit as not being the problem....

does the gauge not move ? or read way full ??

trying to save you pain from removing the dash.........

and as a matter of fact I am pulling a 69 J model pad here in the next several days

and can take step by step pics........

its been 25 years since I pulled a 69 sj pad ... I know theres a couple bit?h bolts

can anyone verify the position of these ... seems they wer e near the radio

and how to get to them ??

Scott

It's been a long time but as I recall you had to first remove the driver's side A/C vent outlet and in behind there is a 1/2" hex headed bolt that points to the left.

Also up underneath the radio lower dash to the right there is another brace with the same sized bolt.

Sorry I didn't get back right away. Vacation needed! But yes replaced sender and made a better ground. Unplug goes to full. Half a tank reads 1/8th. Fuel guage low and high resistance sides. I'm thinking guage.
