Sometimes it takes awhile for the crack(s) to really manifest themselves. Usually a few hot & cold cycles will do. Wish you the best.

I happened on a 6.2 diesel starter for cheap, machined down the armature to "standard" spec's, put on a Pontiac nose & ended my hard start problem. (... bad news is the increased weight)
