389 Engine paint flaking off near exhaust manifold.

Does anyone know how to get around the problem of flaking paint and rust on the 389 block near the exhaust manifolds and on the intake near the carbie? Any information would be appreciated,Thanks.

Fan distance & what temperature is to hot?

Can anyone tell me what the proper distance between the fan and the radiator should be on a 65? (389)
The other question i have is what temperature should the motor be sitting on?
