Close or wide ratio refers to the transmission. The ratio part referred to the percentage drop of rpm between gears. The m22 is a close ratio tranny. It is the same gearing as the m21. The m20 was the wide ratio. I think The wide ratio would have suited the torque of a Pontiac better. The m22 was a stronger tranny because of the straiter cut gears. It made more noise however. Therefor the nickname rock crusher.
