I want to try running my new Mickey Thompson 10.5 W slicks without tubes but the last time I did it the tires would go flat in a few days. I heard that using soap inside the tires would eliminate the problem. Do any of you have any tips or tricks that work?

Check the thickness of the tire bead and your wheel rim carefully. If you use lightweight wheels, the standard rim screws can break thru the tire bead and they'll go flat. We had to buy screws that were slightly shorter.

A wrinkle wall tire requires a tube due to the flexing of the sidewall which in turn can break the bead of the tire from the rim causing bad things to happen.
I did it 12 years ago when I borrowed a friends M&H tires. I didn't know there were no tubes. I lived but wouldn't intentionally do it. Most likely you'll be okay if your car doesn't launch hard but why take the risk...

Joe's car launches harder than most I've seen,,,but he'll be just fine if he listens to the first two replys. Know of too many extremely fast/hard launching cars that are'nt using tubes to listen to the "chicken little/sky is falling" types trying to advise against it. Liquid dish soap works, many prefer palmolive, but other brands have been known to work too, seems one of those deals where susperstitious types have their own favorites, some guys prefer Dawn or some other brand over the palmolive. There have been other threads here on this subject,I'll see if I can dig them up and provide some linkage for ya'll. |

Agree with the "Chief" here. I ran my M/T 10.5Ws without tubes for 2 seasons -chords were showin-never flat. I prefer the lemon scented dish soap fellas. LOL

When I buy new slicks next year I'll rethink my position... I currently run M&H Racemasters...

http://www.tvparty.com/g2c/madge00.ram But seriously... When I changed to my new wheels the valve stem hole wasn't big enough for my tubes to fit through. I had the tires installed anyway, but wasn't sure if it would be safe to run them without the tubes. Hmmm, I guess I can. (M/T ET Street 28x12.5 on M/T ET Drag wheels)

Just an FYI for those that dont know who rompn63 is:
Joe's "rompin redskin" is a NSS car that runs in the low tens regularly IIRC,and the launches are indeed impressive! His best is a 9.75 @ 138 in "match race" trim. Nostalgia super stock.com I gotta go find those other threads... |

I have had my best luck having the tires mounted and inflated while the dishwashing soap is still wet.

I'm getting smart...er from this post. I run steel wheels with 28-105.15 M&H Rasemaster Cheater Slicks. I do use tubes. Does a tire bond better to a steel wheel or aluminum wheel. I'm guessing an aluminum. Should one wheel material over the other use screws? Does weight (in my case 3730lbs) make a difference on a 12 second car on weather to screw or not?

I've run without tubes for 3 years. Screws, no tubes, and Palmolive...no troubles, no leaky.
I'd not worry about rim screws on a 12 second car. If you are worried, make marks on the tire and the rim, and see if it's moving. I did that for a long time when I was slower. Once the tires started moving about an inch per pass, I decided to screw them.

I have no idea why anyone would take a risk and run tires w/o the tubes. To me it's a risk not worth taking. So, $50 bucks for a tube, well worth it....
