No,,,only 61-63 Tempest will fit. If you have worn out shoes, best bet is to take them to an industrial brake repair shop & get them relined. I have mine bonded not rivited. When the shoes wear out, the rivits destroy the drum.

Just curious, what is the difference between the 189 shoes and ones for the Tempest? They are 9.00 X 1.75 and the illustrations I have seen appear to the the same shoe configuration ie. number and placement of holes, adjuster end and top end.

Tom,,I have not had each in my hands side by side,,,but I belive the hole placement is different & wont mount up to a Tempest backing plate. One of these days I will get down to NAPA & take a Tempest shoe with me & compair the two.

I already compared the two and have a thread somewhere here from over a year ago , in detail with part numbers, of converting to corvair brakes with nothing more than the replacement of the corvair cylinder pins/rods available from your local parts store. The difference is the pin recess depth of about 3/8 inch on the corvair shoes. If you use corvair shoes with tempest pins , your pedal is bascially to the floor before the pins begin to press the shoe. Everything else is identical. I've been running corvair brakes for over ten years. Much cheaper than tempest shoes, and available. Hey, more shoes for me if nobody else wants to read my replies.

For anybody interested; I just bought 4 wheel cyl's for my
Tempest wagon from canter, All 4 with shipping was $219.00.
Kind of pricey but I plan on having this car for a long time.
I just bought rebuild kits for the old ones I'll keep for spares
or could possible help some one else out Thats got brake problems.

Could someone confirm, are the return springs, self-adjuster, hardware and the brake shoes identical from the front axle to the rear axle (on the same side, of course)!?

Not sure about the 63's but,,,,all the adjusters & hardware is the same on all 4 wheels on the 61-62 cars. Adjusters on the right hand backing plates are towards the rear of the axle center line, adjusters on the left side are in front of axle centerline. All turn the same way. Only thing different is with the rear shoes where the parking brake linkage is in between the leading & trailing shoes & the links that the park cable is attached to.

Pull apart & clean & dry all the wheel cylinder parts before storage/rebuild. They will rust/corroed if just tossed in a box somewhere.

I have brand new 189's in my hand for my car.
The holes are right and it is exact in every way,
except the cut outs for the wheel cylinder push pins.
That spot has a deeper cut .

I'm glad I learned this now.
I guess I will need the pins.


Where can i get the longer Corvair pins ?
Can you get just the pins ?
What year ?

I dont mind getting those if the 189's will work forever....

Clarks Corvair shows 2 different pins, 60-64 & 65-69.

I'm pretty certain the wheel cylinder links H1414-2 from Oreillys are the pins I bought. 2" long and much beefier than the shorter and thinner tempest links.

The NAPA interchange shows 80743 as their part #. The shoes are TS189 and wholesale for $21. plus $6.50 core.

I have 4 on thier way for in the morning.
Napa was closed when I got home, so I called O' Reillys

They found it under H1414 even though it does have -2 in the part number.
$1.85 each

Found my original thread. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=655105 Before I found the aftermarket parts described, I was using original corvair hardware.

I do remember, however, the corvair shoes have thicker metal and you will need to modify your Tempest starwheel adjusters (not recommended) or buy the aftermarket. I want to say there was a minor modification I needed to make for clearance, but can't remember off hand. I want to say some grinding on the pin to fit the cylinder seal better,too. Expect something just to be safe on time.

I called the Auto Zone & theey said 4 cly was unavailable but for the V~8 they are .

Rear Shoes.

Is there a difference from 4 to 8 cly? & can you direct me to the information
