Bottom line is that it all depends on how you define "restore." For a concours frame-off restoration, you're looking at spending well north of $50k. You could certainly spend $100k on it without trying too hard. And you'd have a car worth $50k-$60k.

If you're looking to flip it, you're better off paying $24k for it and selling it for $12k as is. Lot less money lost that way.

If you just want a nice Carousel Red 69 RAIII Judge, you can easily pick up a restored one for $50-60k (i.e., a car that someone else spent $100k in restoring). And if you do your homework, you won't end up with one that needs to be re-restored.

Very true. I spent a little over 60k on mine not counting the cost of the car or the time and labor of my own. It gets deep in a hurry when a car comes completely apart like it should. Toward the end the little things will really add up.

I just looked at your pictures and a couple of corrections - your intake is a 9794234 which would be correct for 69 depending upon date code - it was also used late in 68. Your block also has a 7 digit EUN which would make it 69 & later - check the casting number & date code back by the distributor. Also - the carb is without question a restamp.

After seeing the photobucket pictures I will lower my original estimate substantially. OP had said "decent shape with minor rust in usual places - fenders and hood" Pictures reveal more than minor rust and some difficult areas to repair. I would imagine the sheetmetal will need extensive repairs once you get in there and clean everything up. You probably already know this having restored other cars.

Just have a quick question. If you look at the picture showing the drivers side of the car with the door shut the bottom of the door sticks out from the quarter panel. My car (a pontiac built car) does the exact same thing. It is exactly like that one.

Was this a common thing on these cars? Just curious

You’re correct! The car is drawing a lot of interest. I've already had a lot of calls and questions and also a lot of interesting trade offers, including an unrestored 70 GTO Judge (polo white)!!!!!

I'm glad I got a new cell phone last week I’m not sure my old phone would have handle all the test messages and call. I will let you know how it turns out but it looks like it’s going to be an interesting weekend.

I hope he gets it. I've seen many people buy a project because they can afford it. They plan to do it "right" some day. If they follow thru and spend the time and money, they often will look back and say I could have saved a ton by just buying a finished car. Some spend along as money allows.... That's the only thing I can figure when I see these projects bring that kind of money.

My thoughts and opinion haven't changed a bit , no matter what it bids to.

And on the other hand , if it makes a real sale over 12-15k - that is probably good for those of us who might be about ready to let go of some Judge projects .

It doesn't surprise me that this car is getting so much interest. We've recently seen some complete crap-bucket Judges in lousy colors needing a complete rebody bid to $5-7k. While this car needs more work than I originally thought, it still has a lot going for it, not the least of which it is THE Judge color.

Most enthusiasts don't have $50-60k laying around to shell out for the excellent examples mentioned in this thread. While this car will ultimately require more than that to restore properly, the entry point is signficantly lower and the new owner can spread the restoration costs over time. Or he may just want to get it street worthy and bang around in it as is.

For whatever reason, there also seems to be a value premium given to cars with a "barn find" mystique. If I were the seller, I'd be quite happy with the current price - anything beyond that is a nice bonus. Bidding looks legit, so far...

I'd like to see the winner cough up the cash...Bidding is easy and costs nothing. Call it a contract or whatever, but EBAY always sides with the buyer. All they have to say is 'IT WAS MISREPRESENTED..." and they walk. And really what did that cost you?

If they don't see it BEFORE THEY BID, the bids don't mean diddly. They'll start chisling after the sale or making excuses or just don't show up (my favorite)...So sell lower or relist is your choice.

Just another reason why I hate selling cars.

I don't think the folks who write a check for a done car are interested in a project car, and I also think that, for the most part, folks who are interested in project cars are not interested in a completely restored or "done" cars. The concept of buying a done car sounds good, but in my opinion, it's not all that it's cracked up to be.

Case in point - I bought a 68 hemi Roadrunner - paid $30k for it. It was a freakin' gorgeous car and a real RR, but not an original hemi car. Owner had spent $80k on it and got in a bind for $. He hadn't even driven the car. Anyway, that car sat in the garage for most of the 3 years that I owned it. Took it to one local "cruise-in." Had a lot more fun and spent a lot more time behind the wheel of my beater primer/Carousel '69 Judge that I pulled out of a barn and got back on the road.

If this hobby was all about the bottom line, no one would buy project cars and restore them - - unless you find a RAIV Judge for $5k and restore yourself, you're not likely to break even.
