I just noticed in my post #16 above I got the specs incorrect on the exhaust lobe for the SD Performance Old Faithfull cam. Sorry for any confusion.
Here are the correct numbers: Lobe 3120B 306 245 161 .3830 The numbers in that post and here are direct from a friends Old Faithful cam card. He purchased it from Dave in 2008 .

I think what is holding back the idle is the X-pipe. I have changed all my cars to H-pipe. each car's idle was held back in terms of deep sound and the lope of the idle. In each case, it changed the sound to the way I want the car to sound like a muscle car. Here are a before and after video of my 1970 GTO running a 461 with the off the shelf XR 288. It is the same cam you have except the LSA is 110. Before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoYVfvmtuX8 Exhaust is Magna Flow with X-Pipe After: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYMaDAeOO3g&t=47s Exhaust is now Flow Master American Thunder Series with Texas TA mufflers and H-pipe. Big difference in sound. Last edited by napster; 12-31-2022 at 11:05 AM. |

I don't think Pypes ever offered the H-pipe. In fact, I'm having the last conversion done next week. The last car being converted is one of my '78's with a 461. It has the pypes system on it right now with the x-pipe. My tech guy had a problem finding an h-pipe. It seems the industry is getting away from it. A person use to be able to get just the h-pipe section. In order to get the h-pipe now the entire exhaust system has to be purchased. Thankfully, my tech guy knew someone that had an h-pipe laying around and picked it up at the price that is a fraction of a full exhaust system. |

Thanks for the information on Pypes. Didn't know they offered it. However, it still shows the only way to get it these days is as a full exhaust system. If you can get your guy to make one and splice it into the existing system that might be the best way to go and get the sound you want. Also, it can be easier on the wallet. I always kid around with my mechanic that when I have to pay for a project, I tell him I'm here for his weight reduction program. One would think weight would be taken out of the car to make it faster. Nope, it makes my wallet lighter. LOL. Happy New Year!! Last edited by napster; 01-01-2023 at 01:31 PM. |

Thanks for the new information. Here are two more videos of my '78 with the 406. It runs two separate mufflers even in the video with the x-pipe. First is the car with an x-pipe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfOkesxdb7M Second is the same car with only the x-pipe changed to an H-pipe. I taped this yesterday. The cam is the BOO HISS XE274H-10 flat tappet from Comp cam. I hear the lope in the second video a lot more than the first. https://youtu.be/oP91rZkA84Y I figured it might help to hear the difference on a second generation bird.
