Pontiacs came from the factory with a bearing. I always assumed the engineers knew what they were doing and I have always used the 7109 bearing. Never had a problem with the bearing failing.

I have the same issue with my 65 GTO. I have a dedicated block of wood for this purpose. In my case a 2x4 is too thick. I believe it’s a piece of 5/4 with some blue tape on it so I can find it easy.
